Abbas Mirza

1789–1833 · 19th century

Abbas Mirza was the crown prince of Qajar Iran and governor of Azerbaijan, based at Tabriz. He commanded Iranian armies in the Russo-Persian wars of 1804–1813 and 1826–1828, which ended with the loss of the South Caucasus in the treaties of Gulistan and Turkmenchay. He tried to modernise the army on European lines and sent students to Europe, but died before his father Fath Ali Shah.
