Abbas III

r. 1732–1736 · 18th century

Abbas III was an infant Safavid shah placed on the throne by the general Nader in 1732 as a nominal ruler. Real power lay entirely with Nader, who deposed him in 1736 and proclaimed himself shah at an assembly on the Mughan plain. His removal formally ended Safavid rule and marked the foundation of the Afsharid Empire.
