Abd al-Malik I (Saadi sultan)

r. 1576–1578 · 16th century · Also known as Sultan Abd al-Malik

Abd al-Malik I was a sultan of the Saadi dynasty of Morocco in the 1570s. He led the Moroccan forces that defeated the Portuguese army of King Sebastian at the Battle of Alcácer Quibir in 1578, although he died during the battle. The disaster destroyed a Portuguese army and its king, and it appears in the Portuguese Empire's profile as a major military setback.
