Abishemu I

19th–18th century BCE · 18th century BCE

Abishemu I was a ruler of Byblos in the Middle Bronze Age, contemporary with the pharaoh Amenemhat III of Egypt's Twelfth Dynasty. His rock-cut tomb in the royal necropolis of Byblos contained Egyptian gifts, among them an obsidian vase inscribed with Amenemhat III's name. Like his son Ipshemuabi, he wrote his name in hieroglyphs with an Egyptian governor's title, reflecting close ties with Middle Kingdom Egypt.
