Admonitio generalis

789 · 8th century

The Admonitio generalis is a capitulary issued by Charlemagne in 789, one of the main texts of the Carolingian reforms. In over eighty chapters, drawing on church law and probably drafted with the help of Alcuin, it called for the correction of the clergy and people, the proper conduct of worship, the copying of accurate texts and the teaching of reading in schools attached to monasteries and cathedrals.
