Afonso I of Kongo

r. 1509–1543 · 16th century · Also known as Afonso I

Afonso I of Kongo, also known as Nzinga Mbemba, was king of the Kongo Empire from 1509 to 1543. A committed Catholic, he promoted Christianity, literacy and ties with Portugal, while trying to strengthen royal authority. His surviving letters to the Portuguese crown protest the damage caused by the growing slave trade.
