Afzal Khan (general)

d. 1659 · 17th century

Afzal Khan was a leading general of the Bijapur Sultanate under Ali Adil Shah II. In 1659 he was sent with a large army to destroy the rising power of Shivaji, and at a meeting arranged below the fort of Pratapgad he was killed by the Maratha leader, whose troops then routed the Bijapuri army. The encounter became one of the best-known episodes of Maratha history and tradition.
