Al-Hakam I

c. 770–822 · 9th century · Also known as Al-Hakam I of Córdoba

Al-Hakam I was the Umayyad emir of Córdoba from 796 to 822. His reign was marked by harsh repression of internal opposition, including a massacre of notables at Toledo in 797 and the crushing of the Revolt of the Arrabal in Córdoba in 818, after which the rebellious suburb was razed and its inhabitants expelled. He strengthened the emirate's army with professional and slave troops.
