Alabama
Alabama is a state in the south-eastern United States, stretching from the Tennessee River valley to the Gulf of Mexico at Mobile. It was home to Mississippian chiefdoms such as Moundville and later to the Muscogee, Choctaw and Chickasaw, most of whom were forcibly removed in the 1830s. Admitted to the Union in 1819, it became a cotton-growing slave state, a founding member of the Confederacy and later a centre of the civil rights movement.
