Alagakkonara family

14th–15th centuries · 14th century

The Alagakkonara, or Alakeshvara, were a powerful family of ministers in 14th- and early 15th-century Sri Lanka, of south Indian origin. Under the weak kings of Gampola they held real power, built the fortress of Kotte near Colombo and resisted the expansion of the Jaffna kingdom. Their dominance ended after Zheng He captured Vira Alakeshvara in 1411.
