Alai Darwaza

1311 · 14th century

The Alai Darwaza is a domed gateway in the Qutb Minar complex in Delhi, built in 1311 by Alauddin Khalji as the southern entrance to the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque. Faced with red sandstone and white marble, it was the first building in India with true arches and a true dome built on Islamic principles, a landmark of Indo-Islamic architecture.
