Alexander Jannaeus

d. 76 BCE · 1st century BCE · Also known as Alexander Yannai

Alexander Jannaeus was king and high priest of the Hasmonean kingdom of Judaea from 103 to 76 BCE. Through constant wars he extended the kingdom to its greatest size, taking coastal cities and lands east of the Jordan. His harsh suppression of a Pharisee-led revolt made his reign one of internal strife.
