Altars of the Philaeni
The Altars of the Philaeni were an ancient landmark on the coast of the Gulf of Sidra in Libya that marked the boundary between the territory of Carthage and Greek Cyrenaica. According to the legend told by Sallust, two Carthaginian brothers, the Philaeni, agreed to be buried alive there to fix the border in Carthage's favour. In 1937 the Italian colonial government built a triumphal arch nearby.
