Arcesilaus IV

r. c. 462–440 BCE · 5th century BCE · Also known as Arcesilaus IV of Cyrene

Arcesilaus IV was the last king of the Battiad dynasty of Cyrene, the Greek city in Libya. His chariot victory at the Pythian Games at Delphi in 462 BCE was celebrated in two odes by Pindar. Around 440 BCE he was overthrown and killed in a popular rising, and Cyrene became a republic after nearly two centuries of monarchy.
