Arcesilaus III

d. c. 515 BCE · 6th century BCE · Also known as Arcesilaus III of Cyrene

Arcesilaus III was a Battiad king of Cyrene in the later 6th century BCE, son of Battus III and Pheretime. He tried to restore the royal powers curbed by the reforms of Demonax, was driven into exile, returned with mercenaries from Samos and submitted to the Persian king Cambyses II. Herodotus records that he was murdered at Barca, which led his mother to call in a Persian army.
