Amadeus V, Count of Savoy
Amadeus V, called the Great, was Count of Savoy from 1285 until his death in 1323. He extended Savoyard rule, gaining Bresse through his marriage to Sibylle of Baugé, and in 1294 settled his nephew Philip with the family's lands in Piedmont, the origin of the Savoy-Achaea line. He was active in imperial and French politics and strengthened the county's position on both sides of the Alps.
