Pinerolo

Pinerolo is a town in Piedmont, Italy, south-west of Turin at the entrance to the valleys leading to the French Alps. From the 1290s it was the seat of the Savoy-Achaea branch that ruled Piedmont. Seized repeatedly by France, it was French from 1631 to 1696, when its fortress held notable prisoners such as Nicolas Fouquet and the Man in the Iron Mask.
