Amangkurat I

d. 1677 · 17th century

Amangkurat I was ruler of the Mataram Sultanate in Java from 1646 to 1677, son of Sultan Agung. He centralised power harshly, killing many nobles and religious leaders, moved the court to Plered and made agreements with the Dutch East India Company. His rule provoked the Trunajaya rebellion, which captured Plered in 1677; he fled and died on the way to the north coast.
