An Hyang

1243–1306 · 13th century

An Hyang was a Korean scholar-official of the Goryeo period who introduced Neo-Confucianism to Korea. Having encountered the works of Zhu Xi in the Yuan capital, he brought them back and promoted their study, reviving the state academy. The Neo-Confucian officials who later founded Joseon drew on the tradition he began, and the first private academy of Joseon was dedicated to him.
