Andrew Turnbull

1718–1792 · 18th century

Andrew Turnbull was a Scottish physician who founded the colony of New Smyrna in British East Florida in 1768. He brought about 1,400 settlers from Minorca, Greece and Italy to grow indigo on his plantation. Disease, hunger and harsh treatment killed many of them, and in 1777 the survivors abandoned the settlement for St Augustine. Turnbull later moved to Charleston, South Carolina.
