Andriamanelo

16th century · 16th century

Andriamanelo was a Merina king of the central highlands of Madagascar, traditionally dated to the mid-sixteenth century. Royal tradition credits him with subduing the earlier Vazimba inhabitants with iron-tipped spears, founding the line of Merina kings and building fortified hill towns surrounded by ditches. His son Ralambo is said to have given the kingdom the name Imerina.
