Ansar (Sudan)
The Ansar ('helpers') were the followers of Muhammad Ahmad, the Mahdi of Sudan, who rose against Turco-Egyptian rule in 1881. They destroyed Hicks Pasha's army in 1883, took Khartoum in 1885 and formed the army of the Mahdist State until its defeat in 1898. The name survives for the religious movement led by the Mahdi's descendants, the base of Sudan's Umma Party.
