Antioquia Department
Antioquia is a department of north-western Colombia in the Central and Western Cordilleras; its capital is Medellín. In the colonial era it was a major source of gold, worked by enslaved Africans and free prospectors. In the 19th century it was a sovereign state of the Colombian federation, and coffee farming and the commerce of Medellín later made it the leading industrial region of Colombia.
