1716–1795 · 18th century

Antonio de Ulloa (1716–1795) was a Spanish naval officer and scientist who took part in the French geodesic mission to Peru from 1735, and whose account of the voyage first described platinum to European science. Appointed the first Spanish governor of Louisiana, he arrived in New Orleans in 1766, but his weak forces and trade restrictions provoked the Louisiana Rebellion of 1768, which expelled him.
