Antonio Guzmán Fernández

1911–1982 · 20th century

Antonio Guzmán Fernández was President of the Dominican Republic from 1978 to 1982 for the Dominican Revolutionary Party. His election victory over Joaquín Balaguer in 1978, upheld after United States pressure stopped the army from halting the count, brought the country's first peaceful transfer of power between parties. He freed political prisoners and curbed the military, but shot himself in the last weeks of his term.
