Aristocratic Republic

1895–1919 · 19th century

The Aristocratic Republic is the name given by the historian Jorge Basadre to the period of Peruvian history from 1895 to 1919, when governments dominated by the Civilista Party and the coastal landowning and financial oligarchy ruled through regular, restricted elections. It brought relative stability, export growth in sugar, cotton, minerals and rubber, and the modernisation of Lima. It ended with Augusto B. Leguía's coup of 1919.
