Civilista Party

1871 · 19th century

The Civilista Party was a Peruvian political party founded in 1871 by Manuel Pardo, the country's first organised civilian party, representing merchants, financiers and coastal landowners opposed to military rule. Pardo became its first president in 1872, and the party dominated government during the Aristocratic Republic from 1895 to 1919. It declined after Augusto B. Leguía's coup of 1919.
