Arte di Calimala

The Arte di Calimala was the guild of cloth merchants of Florence, named after the street where its members had their shops. The first in prestige of the city's seven major guilds, it imported woollen cloth from northern Europe, finished and dyed it, and sold it across the Mediterranean. It also supervised major works such as the Baptistery of Florence and its bronze doors.
