Artúr Görgei

1818–1916 · 19th century · Also known as Arthur Görgey

Artúr Görgei was the leading Hungarian general of the revolution of 1848–1849. His spring campaign of 1849 drove the Austrians back and recaptured Buda in May. After the Russian intervention he surrendered the main Hungarian army at Világos in August 1849, for which many Hungarians long regarded him as a traitor.
