Arturo Alessandri
Arturo Alessandri (1868–1950) was a Chilean politician who served twice as president, from 1920 to 1925 and from 1932 to 1938. Elected as a reformer backed by the middle and working classes, he clashed with the conservative Congress and, after military interventions, promoted the Constitution of 1925, which restored strong presidential rule. His second term brought recovery from the Depression but also repression of opponents.
