Socialist Party of Chile

1933 · 20th century

The Socialist Party of Chile is a left-wing political party founded on 19 April 1933 by Marmaduke Grove, Eugenio Matte, Oscar Schnake, Salvador Allende and other veterans of the short-lived Socialist Republic of 1932. Allende was elected president in 1970 at the head of the Popular Unity coalition. Banned under the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, the party returned as a leading force of the centre-left after 1990.
