Socialist Realism

1934 · 20th century

Socialist Realism was the officially approved style of art, literature and music in the Soviet Union, proclaimed in the early 1930s and imposed at the first Congress of Soviet Writers in 1934. It required realistic works that showed society in its revolutionary development and served the aims of the Communist Party. It was later adopted in other communist states and lasted until the 1980s.
