Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma

1974–1988 · 20th century

The Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma was the official name of Burma under the one-party constitution of 1974. Under Ne Win and the Burma Socialist Programme Party the state followed the 'Burmese Way to Socialism', with nationalised industry and isolation from the outside world. It ended with the uprising of 1988 and the military takeover that followed.
