Hungarian Declaration of Independence

1849 · 19th century

The Hungarian Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Hungarian parliament at Debrecen on 14 April 1849, during the revolution against Austria. It dethroned the House of Habsburg-Lorraine and made Lajos Kossuth governor-president. Russian intervention crushed the independent state within months, and the Hungarian army surrendered at Világos in August 1849.
