Asameni

fl. 1693 · 17th century

Asameni was a trader of the Akwamu kingdom on the Gold Coast who in 1693 led a party posing as customers that seized the Danish fort of Christiansborg at Osu, near Accra. He held it for about a year, flying his own flag and trading with European ships, before selling it back to the Danes in 1694 while keeping its keys, which Akwamu still holds.
