Ascaric

d. c. 306 · 3rd century

Ascaric was a Frankish king who, with Merogaisus, led raids across the lower Rhine into Roman territory at the start of the 4th century. Both were captured by Constantine the Great, then ruling in Gaul, and thrown to wild beasts in the arena at Trier around 306. The spectacle was celebrated in Latin panegyrics as a warning to the Franks.
