Ashikaga Masatomo
Ashikaga Masatomo was a half-brother of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, sent in 1457 to replace the rebellious Kamakura kubo Ashikaga Shigeuji as shogunal deputy in the Kantō. Unable to enter Kamakura, he settled at Horigoe in Izu province and became known as the Horigoe kubo. After his death his son was overthrown by Hōjō Sōun in 1493, the first step in the rise of the Later Hōjō.
