Ashot I of Iberia

d. 826 · 9th century

Ashot I of Iberia was the Bagratid prince who established his family as the leading power in Georgia. Driven from Tbilisi by the Arabs, he moved to Tao-Klarjeti in the south-west early in the 9th century, rebuilt Artanuji and received the Byzantine title of kouropalates. His descendants, among them Adarnase IV, restored Georgian kingship and later united the country.
