Assembly of the Year XIII

1813–1815 · 19th century · Also known as Assembly of Year XIII

The Assembly of the Year XIII was the general constituent assembly of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, which met in Buenos Aires from 1813. Although it did not declare independence, it adopted a national anthem and coat of arms, abolished noble titles, the Inquisition and torture, and declared children born to enslaved mothers free. Its rejection of the delegates from the Eastern Province deepened the split with José Gervasio Artigas.
