Congress of Tucumán

1816 · 19th century

The Congress of Tucumán was the assembly of deputies from the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata that met in San Miguel de Tucumán from March 1816. On 9 July 1816 it declared independence from Spain, a date now celebrated as Argentina's Independence Day. The congress later moved to Buenos Aires, where it adopted a centralist constitution in 1819 that the provinces rejected.
