Atlit Castle

1218–1291 · 13th century · Also known as Château Pèlerin, Pilgrims' Castle

Atlit Castle, known to the crusaders as Château Pèlerin (Pilgrims' Castle), was a fortress built by the Knights Templar from 1218 on a promontory of the Mediterranean coast south of Haifa, in present-day Israel. It withstood a siege by the Mamluk sultan Baybars in 1265 and was one of the last crusader strongholds, evacuated in August 1291 after the fall of Acre.
