Austrian State Treaty
The Austrian State Treaty, signed in Vienna on 15 May 1955 by the four occupying powers and Austria, restored Austria as a sovereign, independent and democratic state. It ended the Allied occupation that had lasted since 1945, banned union with Germany and protected the rights of minorities. It was followed in October 1955 by Austria's declaration of permanent neutrality.
