Authari

d. 590 · 6th century

Authari was king of the Lombards from 584 to 590, chosen after a ten-year interregnum during which the dukes had ruled without a king. He restored royal power, defended Lombard Italy against Frankish and Byzantine attacks and in 589 married Theodelinda, daughter of the Bavarian duke Garibald I. He died in 590, probably poisoned, and Theodelinda's choice of Agilulf as her next husband made him king.
