Avantiputra

c. 5th century BCE · 5th century BCE

Avantiputra was a king of Surasena, ruling from Mathura, named in early Buddhist texts. His name means son of the princess of Avanti. In the Madhura Sutta of the Pali canon he discusses the claims of the Brahmins to be the highest caste with the monk Mahakaccana, who argues that caste gives no spiritual advantage, and the king then becomes a lay follower of the Buddha.
