Balaputradeva

9th century · 9th century

Balaputradeva was a prince of the Shailendra dynasty of Java who became ruler of Srivijaya in Sumatra in the ninth century. A copper-plate grant of the Pala king Devapala records that, at Balaputradeva's request, five villages were granted to support a monastery he had built at Nalanda, evidence of the close religious links between Bengal and the Buddhist states of maritime Southeast Asia.
