Balaputradewa

9th century · 9th century · Also known as Balaputra

Balaputradewa was a prince of the Sailendra dynasty of Java who became king of Srivijaya in Sumatra in the 9th century. In a common but debated reconstruction, he left Central Java after the Sanjaya line under Rakai Pikatan prevailed there. A copper-plate inscription of the Pala king Devapala, of about 860, records that Balaputradewa founded a Buddhist monastery at Nalanda in India.
