Sanjaya of Mataram

8th century · 8th century · Also known as Rakai Mataram Sang Ratu Sanjaya

Sanjaya was a king of Central Java in the early 8th century, regarded as the founder of the Medang Kingdom of Mataram. The Canggal inscription of 732 records him erecting a Shiva lingam, and later kings, such as those listed in the Mantyasih inscription of 907, traced their line to him. Historians often speak of a Sanjaya dynasty alongside the Buddhist Sailendras.
