Baptists
Baptists are Protestant Christians who practise the baptism of believers, usually by immersion, rather than of infants, and stress the independence of each congregation. The movement arose among English Separatists in the early 17th century, led by John Smyth and Thomas Helwys. Roger Williams founded the first Baptist church in America at Providence in the late 1630s, and Baptists became one of the largest denominations in the United States.
