Duala people

The Duala are a Bantu-speaking people of the Cameroon coast, living mainly around the Wouri estuary and the city of Douala. From the 17th century their chiefs, notably the Bell and Akwa lineages, grew rich as middlemen in the Atlantic trade in slaves, ivory and palm oil. In 1884 their kings signed the treaty that made the estuary the core of German Kamerun.
