Barghash bin Said

c. 1837–1888 · 19th century · Also known as Barghash bin Said of Zanzibar

Barghash bin Said was Sultan of Zanzibar from 1870 to 1888, a son of Said bin Sultan. Under British pressure he signed the treaty of 1873 that closed the Zanzibar slave market. He built palaces including the House of Wonders, introduced piped water and steamships, and claimed a long stretch of the East African coast, but lost much of it to Germany and Britain in the scramble for Africa.
